Nail Job Down First, Then "Go Sharia"

My friend Stef in Quebec just emailed me about Muslim women being hired in Quebec who seem thoroughly integrated into Canadian society, but once they pass the probationary period and attain job security, suddenly they "go Sharia."

This is what Stef wrote me:

One of my best-friends works in a govt-subsidized daycare centre in northern Montreal. Last year they hired a new worker originally from Lebanon. She was dressed in a western manner albeit conservatively, her head was bare, and she aced the interview very well.

Their new employees have a probation period for three months.  She was very good with the kids, very friendly with the co-workers, etc. So after three months, she was hired with full-benefits.
_
All of the sudden, everything changed.  She started to wear a abaya (not the veil, she was wearing the full black coat like in Saudi Arabia and Iran) all the time.  She stopped chatting with the co-workers like she used to, etc. Once she threw a major public tantrum because at a parents and kids potluck there were not enough hallal sausages or some reason like that.
_
So my friend talked to her supervisor. She said that the daycare centre has got to be more careful because it seems like a lot of Muslim women are getting hired because they seem well integrated into our society but then they do a switcheroo.  Once they have the job for sure their real selves come out.
_
My friend then mentioned terrorism, and her boss told her that it was a huge problem because a lot of veiled Muslim women go to work in our daycare centres. We have no problems at all with the Vietnamese, Chileans, Congolese and others who sometimes arrived with only the clothes on their back (and they came from brutal dictatorships) and now they live very well among us, totally well integrated.
_
So my friend is now on the watch, and a lot of people here are as well.  As long as they integrate in our society, good for them.  But if they want to put the sharia here then I will stand up for what is right. Islamic terrorism IS the scourge of our times, and no one will make me take back this statement.
_
The other day I had an Algerian cab driver.   He said that he left his country in the mid-90's because of the Islamic-led civil war.  He told me that we better open our eyes before it is too late.

My first question about this was "Why don't these women hang on to their new freedom and refuse to adopt Sharia garb again when they don't have to?"  But my second question was "What would happen to them if they did?"

Silly question.  Muslim women risk "honor killings" by their relatives if they defy Sharia Law.  Western countries often ignore such killings in their Muslim areas.  Though such women might like to continus their Westernized behavior, it is often just too dangerous for them.

BTW, Bookworm has a similar story based on her own experience with her day care center in California, here, dated July 31, 2007.

Interesting, because that's precisely what one of the women hired at my kids' preschool, here in California, did. The school didn't know what to do. Many were offended, and worried about its effect on the children, but the ultimate decision was that she was doing her job and that it would be dangerous for the school to fire her because of religious expression.
